About

One point of contact, from analysis to release.

Nick Vergauwen, oprichter van VENI Solutions
Nick Vergauwen founder · lead developer

VENI Solutions is born from a vision: to offer software development and consultancy in a personal, dedicated and independent manner. I established it as a platform where I can offer my expertise to clients on a freelance basis, and still have the freedom to build products of my own.

That independence leaves room to keep investing in myself — in time and in resources. I continually pursue further education and hone my skills, so that what I deliver stays current instead of becoming a burden two years from now.

Professionalism is the driving force behind everything I do. Whether it is a collaboration with a client team or a product of my own, the goal is always the same — quality, efficiency, and a solution that keeps running.

  • Independent

No middleman and no resold hours. You talk to whoever builds it.

  • Embedded, not hired in

I work inside your team, know the context and mentor juniors upward.

  • Products of my own

VeniTag and VENI Sites run in production — with real customers and real uptime.

Consultancy

Technical expertise that goes beyond writing code.

My role as a consultant is not just contributing code, but understanding the nuances of each project, collaborating with a diverse team and safeguarding quality without losing sight of the project goals. Below is a selection of the assignments.

Omgeving.net
Lead developer · subteam lead Client: Remmicom · subteam within a larger team
2023 — present earlier 2015 — 2018

Omgeving.net

The software package Flemish local authorities use to manage their territorial affairs: environmental permits, enforcement, supervision and housing policy, with an integrated GIS and mapping environment for the civil servant and the citizen alike. More than 200 municipalities work with it. Under the bonnet it is a monolith of 120+ projects and hundreds of thousands of files, built by several subteams.

I helped set Omgeving.net up and came back to it years later, now as lead of a subteam. Besides building, I guide colleagues in working with AI — Claude Code in particular — so the whole team keeps up. One subteam had been stuck for months without delivering anything; I steered it towards a different way of working, which took a few frank conversations, but it is delivering again.

Central services

The same functional requirements kept recurring project after project: document generation, file management, email sending, minutes management, digital signing and communication with the National Register (Rijksregister), Connective and MAGDA. We centralised them so every application could plug them in and bug fixes happened in one place. Developing, maintaining and handing over those services became my primary task.

Citizen

The replacement for Bevolking.NET, with which governments manage their citizens’ data: registering newborns with the National Register (Rijksregister), driving licences, changes of domicile and the police investigations around a new address. Our task was to migrate from AS400 to SQL and to replace the outdated WPF application with a new website.

Identity Provider
Lead developer Client: Remmicom · team of 2
2019 — 2023

Identity Provider

An authentication service that validated a wide range of clients for an equally wide range of APIs, with a management website around it. Optionally coupled to Gebruikersbeheer, so that roles came along in the claims of the JWT token. Signing in was possible with a username, Windows logon, Azure AD or ItsMe via CSAM — on the intranet as well as on the internet.

Consultatie Rijksregister

National Register consultation

A multi-tenant application with which users perform all kinds of look-ups in the National Register (Rijksregister). Unlike the intranet solutions Remmicom usually delivers, this one runs on the open internet — with everything that brings in terms of security and isolation.

Link-Octopus

A link between the bookkeeping packages of Remmicom’s various subsidiaries and Octopus. One side spoke AS400 (contracten.net), the other an OData endpoint (ionBIZ) — both are retrieved and synchronised. Still running.

Central Angular packages

As more Angular applications came along, the need for reusable components grew. We built NPM packages that work both together and separately, with a demo application as a guide alongside them — so colleagues could use them without needing me.

And more…

There are plenty of other main and side projects, but to keep this page readable they are not all listed. The experience runs from solo projects to teams of eight, and from assignments of a few months to several years — with both compact and expansive codebases.

Mostly in the role of lead developer: the bridge between management and development, and mentoring junior developers towards a senior role. My career as a software developer started in 2011.

Products

Products of my own, in production.

Alongside the consultancy work I build and maintain two platforms of my own. Not side projects: they run, they are used, and they are the proof of everything above.
